Italian Interior Minister: We will not establish hotspots for receiving migrants in Tunisia

Italy, through its Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, has affirmed that the idea of establishing a hotspot for receiving migrants in Tunisia "must be completely ruled out," as "there is no need for it."

Minister Piantedosi said in an interview with the Italian newspaper "La Stampa" on Monday, "We are working on sharing projects focused on supported voluntary return for migrants," which, "if successful, will also alleviate pressure on Tunisian territory, while respecting the basic rights of individuals."

The minister continued, "We expect that increasing cooperation with countries of departure and transit will lead to increasingly significant results," explaining that "another phase of this cooperation is planned in the coming days," as "I will meet with my counterparts from Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia at an important meeting," as reported by the Italian news agency AKI.
