Italy’s new Prime Minister vows to stop illegal immigration

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni discussed, on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, the crisis of illegal immigration in the Mediterranean.

Meloni said in her speech at the Parliament that she aims to end this phenomenon in the sea.

"We must stop illegal departures and human trafficking," pledging to stop boats heading to Europe from Africa.

Meloni mentioned that more than 77,000 crossed the sea to Italy this year which increased the pressure on the state.

She asserted: "We do not intend in any way to question the right of asylum for those fleeing wars and persecutions."

"All we want to do in relation to immigration is to stop the people traffickers from having the choice of deciding who enters Italy," she highlighted.

Meloni sworn in, on Saturday, to be Italy's first female Prime Minister and the leader of the Brothers of Italy.

Meloni and her cabinet took the oath in the presence of the Italian president, Sergio Mattarella.
