Keir Starmer became prime minister of Britain on Friday, July 5, 2024, after his Labor Party delivered a decisive win in the general election.

The 61-year-old former human rights lawyer lacks the star power of some of his predecessors but led a remarkable turnaround for the Labor Party.

“Across our country, people will be waking up to the news that a weight has been lifted, a burden finally removed from the shoulders of this nation,” a jubilant Starmer told supporters in central London in the early hours of Friday morning.

Starmer replaces Rishi Sunak, who took office less than two years ago and called Starmer to congratulate him.
