A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of southern Japan on Thursday, leading to a tsunami advisory.
The quake, centered off Kyushu island, caused tremors strongest in Miyazaki prefecture. Tsunami waves of up to 50 centimeters were recorded along Kyushu's coast and the nearby island of Shikoku.
Authorities are assessing potential impacts on the Nankai Trough and checking for damage at nuclear plants. Reports indicate some damage, including broken windows at Miyazaki airport.
