Algeria and UAE to Pledge Funds For Jenin Reconstruction

Algeria and the UAE announced large financial donations on 6 July to help the residents of Jenin, who seek to repair damage from a large-scale Israeli military operation carried out against the northern West Bank city earlier this week.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced a $30 million donation following what his office called the “barbaric and criminal attack launched by the Israeli occupation forces on the city and its camp in the West Bank, which left many victims among the defenseless Palestinian brothers and caused destruction to the infrastructure, with the displacement of many Palestinians who left their homes in search of safe shelters.”

During the operation, Israeli forces killed 12 Palestinians and demolished homes and streets with bulldozers, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate.

The UAE pledged on Thursday to give $15 million to help rebuild the Jenin refugee camp after the most intense Israeli military operation in the occupied West Bank since Operation Defensive Shield, launched by then Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon during the Second Intifada in 2002.

According to the UAE’s state-run WAM news agency, the funds will be granted to UNRWA, the UN agency that assists Palestinian refugees, to help rebuild damaged homes and businesses.
