During his meeting on Monday, May 30, 2022, at the Palace of Carthage, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Tunisians Abroad, Mr.Othman Jerandi, the President of the the Republic of Tunisia, Kais Saied said that "It is out of the question to tolerate any form of interference in the internal affairs of Tunisia."
"The sovereignty of Tunisia cannot, in any case, be the subject of bidding," said the head of state, denouncing "the positions of the Venice Commission on the situation in Tunisia, especially with regard to the election authority and the referendum of next July 25.
"Those who want to interfere at all costs in the choices of the Tunisian people, are no longer welcome in Tunisia," he said in a video published on the Facebook page of the Presidency of the Republic.
He stressed that the sovereignty of States is guaranteed by international laws, adding that Tunisia has the necessary laws to organize the elections in all transparency.
Last Friday, the Venice Commission issued, at the request of the European delegation in Tunisia, an "urgent opinion" on the constitutional and legislative framework concerning the referendum of July 25 and the parliamentary elections of December 17, announced by President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, including the decree-law No.2022-22 amending and supplementing the organic law No.23 on the High Independent Electoral Authority (ISIE).
Indeed, the commission believes that the repeal of the decree-law No.2022-22 amending and supplementing the law on ISIE is "essential for the legitimacy and credibility of any electoral process or referendum.
For this commission the elections should be conducted by the ISIE "in its composition prior to the decree-law No.2022-22.
