Tunisia, EU: discussing ways to fight against migration and trafficking

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Tunisians abroad stated that the Minister, Nabil Ammar, received today, Thursday, April 27, 2023, at the ministry’s headquarters, the European Commissioner for home affairs, Mrs Mr. Ylva Johansson, who is on a working visit to Tunisia.

During this meeting, the Tunisian Minister underlined the strategic dimension of the relations between Tunisia and the European Union and the importance of the European support for Tunisia to carry out its socio-economic reforms and establish an inclusive and equitable development model within the framework of a partnership based on mutual respect and solidarity aiming to better manage the common challenges, including the migration issue.

In this context, the Minister recalled the need to deal with migration issues according to a global approach based on a balance between, on the one hand, socio-economic development and the promotion of legal channels of mobility and, on the other hand, the fight against trafficking in human beings and migrants.

The European Commissioner reiterated the European Union's solidarity with Tunisia and its sustained commitment to support it in the economic, financial and social fields, and mainly in the framework of concerted management of migrations by promoting new vocational training and employment opportunities and improving the joint efforts to fight against human and migrant trafficking.

Both sides expressed their willingness to establish a partnership for the mobility of skills and qualified workers and a political framework to deepen cooperation in the fight against trafficking.
