Tunisia and Guinea Address Migration Issues and Strengthen Bilateral Ties

The situation of Guinean migrants in Tunisia, illegal migration, and prospects of cooperation were at the heart of a meeting held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Nabil Ammar, and Guinea's Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Rose Pola Pricemou, in Kampala, Uganda.

The two ministers met on the sidelines of the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement and the G-77 plus China Third South Summit 2024 (January 21-22).

The meeting was an opportunity to hold a frank and positive dialogue which helped overcome misunderstandings on the situation of Guinean nationals in Tunisia, according to a statement by the Tunisian Foreign Ministry.

Tunisia takes pride in its African identity and lives up to its commitment towards the continent, Minister Ammar said. Legal migrants from Guinea are welcome in Tunisia.

Tunisia prefers to solve issues, if any, through direct dialogue, cooperation and mutual trust so as to avoid smear campaigns and untruths aimed to undermine relations between the two countries and their common interests.

Tunisia's approach to cooperation with Guinea and other countries rests on the respect of the sovereignty of each country and non-interference in its internal affairs and choices.

For her side, Rose Pola Pricemou praised the Foreign Minister for his frankness and said a number of isolated incidents are not to be taken into consideration.

The Guinean Minister also laid emphasis on the importance of intensifying cooperation, particularly in education and technical training, and called for increasing the quota of scholarships granted to Guinean students and training sessions for technicians and engineers.
