Algeria Recalls its Ambassador from France
France has officially recognized Morocco's sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara, altering its long-standing neutral stance. This shift was conveyed in a letter from President Emmanuel Macron to King Mohammed VI of Morocco, where Macron stated that France supports Morocco's autonomy plan proposed in 2007 as the only viable solution for a just and lasting resolution in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions.
This announcement coincided with Morocco's Throne Day, celebrating King Mohammed VI's accession in 1999. The Moroccan Royal Palace hailed this as a significant development backing Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.
In response, Algeria has recalled its ambassador to France, criticizing Macron's statement as unprecedented for any French government.
