
EU concerned about credibility of electoral process in Tunisia
(TAP) - The decree reforming the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) risks reducing its independence at a critical political moment, only a few months before the next elections in Tunisia, the European Union (EU) spokesperson said.
In a statement published on the EU website, the official considered “the independence of the ISIE a crucial element in guaranteeing the credibility of an electoral process which is intended to lead to a return to institutional normality in the country.”
The Union will follow with the utmost attention the appointment of future members of the ISIE to so that they remain a guarantee for the independence and transparency of this commission, said the spokesperson.
The EU also recalled the importance of the implementation of any reform as well as the electoral calendar, on the basis of an inclusive dialogue involving all political and social actors in order to guarantee the stability and prosperity of Tunisia.
