In a statement posted to Twitter on April 3, 2022, The Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė said that her country had abandoned the consumption of Russian gas, which she described as "toxic", in a sign of solidarity with Ukraine against the ongoing war with Russia.

She wrote: “From now on, we will not consume a single cubic centimeter of toxic Russian gas”, making Lithuania the first European country to impose an economic ban on the import of natural gas from Russia.
