Tunisia received four C208 aircraft from the United States today, September 9, 2024. The aircraft, equipped with advanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) systems, were handed over during a ceremony at the Al-Aouina Air Base in the capital, Tunis, in the presence of U.S. Ambassador to Tunisia, Joey Hood, and Tunisia’s Minister of National Defense, Khaled Souhaili.

In a press statement following the event, Minister Souhaili highlighted the significance of these aircraft, which are designed for reconnaissance missions.

He emphasized that the modern systems installed on the aircraft would significantly enhance the Tunisian military’s operational capabilities in combating terrorism and transnational organized crime.

The minister further explained that the aircraft will boost Tunisia’s operational and logistical capacity in intelligence gathering, surveillance, and aerial reconnaissance. Their advanced systems allow for precise execution of missions, as well as swift transmission and analysis of data, contributing to national and regional security and peace.

Minister Souhaili also noted that the delivery of these aircraft is part of the ongoing military cooperation between Tunisia and the United States.

This collaboration was solidified during the 34th session of the Joint Military Commission, held in 2020, and includes the implementation of various bilateral agreements.

The defense minister expressed his appreciation for the positive coordination with the U.S. side, calling the deal a "successful" agreement, similar to previous acquisitions such as the C130 aircraft, training planes, and fast patrol boats.

He also underscored the joint efforts aimed at establishing an electronic border surveillance system, which aligns with the objectives of the bilateral cooperation program.
